Problem Solving for RE Managers
Discuss with colleagues the following dilemmas actually faced by RE co-ordinators & subject leaders in recent years. Following some initial discussion, apply the method described underneath in reaching a way forward.
- You have taken over as RE Co-ordinator / Head of RE in a school where RE is not a popular subject. The headteacher tells you that pupils 'hate RE' and there are some governors who can't see the point of having RE in the curriculum at all.
- A number of parents request that their children be withdrawn from any 'Muslim RE'.
- The deputy headteacher wants to give more time to RE, but only if lessons cover the requirements for PSHE and Citizenship.
- The headteacher wants to send a letter home to all parents, noting that they have a right to withdraw their children from RE and offering pupils alternative courses to RE, such as extra PE, Languages, Drama and ICT.
- For Primary schools: the Reception teacher tells you that there is no need for RE in her / his class as it not mentioned in the Foundation Stage guidance.
- For Secondary schools: GCSE exam results in Religious Studies have been poorer than other subjects in your school for the last 3 years running.
