Definitions: England (Ofsted)

Ofsted has an extensive database of evidence based on inspection. Analysis of that information provides valuable pointers to what is good RE. 'Inspecting Religious Education 11-16 with guidance on self-evaluation' is particularly useful for all who work to raise standards further. It makes a series of clear statements on what is thought to be good teaching and learning; three sections are linked below:

The full text of Inspecting Religious Education 11-16 with guidance on self-evaluation can be found on the Ofsted web site: www.ofsted.gov.uk (search for the full title under 'Publications').

The non-statutory national framework for RE also has guidance on good RE, beginning with a statement of the importance of the subject as part of a young person's educational entitlement >>

In 'Common Requirements' three principles of inclusion are identified, as set out in the National Curriculum. These are:

  • setting suitable learning challenges
  • responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs; and
  • overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils.
