BetterRE - for teachers, advisers, and RE professionals

(Decorative Flash Animation)

What is good RE?

You probably have your own ideas about what makes good RE - in both teaching and learning.
Before going further in this section try this linked activity on
what YOU think makes successful RE >>.

Whilst some of the ideas will be obvious, others may well be less so; being clear about priorities is important for us all.

Evidence of good RE teaching is going to be found in work produced by pupils which at least achieves the standards described in the non-statutory framework appropriate to their age and ability.

Examples of more detailed descriptions of what is good (and not so good) RE can be found in a range of documents. Two examples are given here, one from England and the other from Wales.

REonline News points to useful guidance and advice documents about good practice - see especially the Government Agencies page, which includes links to useful OFSTED documents.

Essential reading for all RE teachers, whether specialist or not, is Rivett, Rosemary (ed.), 2007, A Teacher's Handbook of Religious Education, 3rd edition, RE Today Services, ISBN 978-1-904024-95-8.
