Pupil-speak 'can do' Levels

The full attainment target statements in your syllabus should always be referred to when planning work for assessment in RE, though it is often helpful to have a simplified version to guide pupils. You may also find that colleagues who are not familiar with the terminology of RE are interested in simplified statements that can be shared with pupils and used as targets for improvement.

Some locally agreed syllabuses already contain simplified levels statements, but if your syllabus uses the statements in the non-statutory national framework you might like to make use of the 'Better RE' version linked below.

These 'pupil-speak' or 'can-do' statements have been written by Deborah Weston and Dave Francis. They have NOT been officially approved by QCA and are NOT a substitute for the full version of the levels in your syllabus or in the non-statutory national framework. Nevertheless, they may prove useful for:

  • sharing objectives for learning and assessment with pupils;
  • constructing pupils' peer and self-assessment activities;
  • record keeping;
  • constructing a statement bank for reporting to parents;
  • planning future work in relation to individual and class programmes of study in different areas of study (eg, beliefs, practices, forms of expression, identity, meaning and values)
