BetterRE - for teachers, advisers, and RE professionals

Assessing RE

In making assessment of pupils' work it is important to distinguish between:
Assessment for Learning and Assessment of Learning.

QCA suggests:

Assessment for learning involves the use of classroom assessment to improve learning.
(More information on assessment FOR learning is available here >>)

Assessment of learning simply measures what learners know or can do.

The focus of this section is on making assessments of learning.

(More guidance on how to use assessment information is available here >>)

Locally Agreed Syllabuses and National Guidance

Whilst RE syllabuses are locally determined, QCA and the DfES have published a non-statutory national framework for religious education, to help improve the consistency and effectiveness of assessment in RE nationally. For more information about local syllabuses and the national framework - and links - click here >>

Use the link on the left to find out more about levels for assessment in RE or click here >>:

  • descriptors of the three 'strands' in both Attainment Targets at each level (these are to be found on the same page layout for easy reference)
  • the 'levels' and how they relate to Key Stages
  • a print option which allows the grid to be used for reference when making assessments of learning

  • a 'grade sheet' facility which allows individual / group achievements to be recorded for a particular task or assignment

QCA's national levels of expectation are important - they help when comparing what is being done in the classroom with what is expected nationally. Local Agreed syllabus documents may also give some guidance on assessment in RE.
